Together Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Here's a dare for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Settle in with your partner and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. On the surface, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together resides a intense meditation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for a decade. Married in reality in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The story begins when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the rural area for her career. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their country house, a storm hits, and the protagonists discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and delivers them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and far away from his social circle. He fears the notion of completely losing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie confront the sort of issues that come with most partnerships a decade in. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these anxieties of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a powerful case for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu as of this moment.
